Why do animals not convert all excess fuel into fatty acids instead they store their energy as glycogen
Glucose is the main fuel in our body and all the cells of body are dependent on glucose for energy.
Glucose is converted into glycogen and stored rather than converted into fat because of following reason-
Conversion of glucose into fats is a long process. It involves many steps and large amount of energy is required in formation of fats. On the other hand, conversion of glucose into glycogen is a very easy and short process and it requires only 2 ATP molecule( which is very less as compared to that in fat synthesis)
Also, glycogen is quickly converted into glucose by simple chemical reaction called Glycolysis. So whenever there is increased demand of energy or blood glucose level goes down, glycogen instantaneously supply glucose. Formation of glucose from fats (gluconeogenesis) is a slow process as compared to glycolysis.
