Answer- When the muscle contracts,it is a concentric motion.In concentric contraction,the length of the entire muscle shortens and this causes tension on the muscle.As the muscle shortens,it generates force to move an object.

Answer to 2nd part- muscle shortening generates force which helps to lift the weight against gravity.

Example:

Raising of a weight during a biceps curl.When muscle shortens i.e.in concentric motion,weight is lifted against gravity,whereas when muscle lengthens i.e in eccentric motion,weight is lowered in the direction of gravity.
