Answer #1

Cancerous cells can divide so rapidly that they will often produce a glycocalyx that is different than other cells in the body. This may result in to recognize the tumorous or cancerous cell as foreign bodies by the cells of the immune system, which result in destruction of the foreign cells.

Cancerous cells are the cells in which there is no normal growth control of the cell thus results in rapid cell division which produce changes in the glycocalyx of cancerous cell that results in destroying cancerous cells by enabling the immune system to recognize those cancerous cells as foreign bodies.

Question 3. How did you develop so many different types of cells in your body, when all your cells have the same set of genes in them?

Cells are constantly getting signals that determine whether they survive, grow and divide, differentiate, or die (see figure 16-6). Cells are grown in culture (outside of the body) for a variety of reasons- such as testing drug efficacy and determining the properties of different types of cancers (to name a couple). In order to culture cells, essential nutrients (carbohydrates, amino acids, vitamins, and hormones) need to be present, and these nutrients are provided by using different types of cell culturing...

As B-lymphocytes mature, the process of VDJ recombination can produce ~1.6 million different combinations of the V,D, and J segments that make up the light and heavy chains of the B-cell receptors. A typical person might have 5 liters of blood and 6000 white blood cells per microliter of blood. Approximately one third of all the white blood cells are lymphocytes and approximately a quarter of the lymphocytes are B-cells. On average, how many cells in the body at a...

The skin is the body's largest organ. It's made up of many different types of cells. Oils, produced by the sebaceous glands, prevent the skin from drying and splitting. The pigment melanin, produced by melanocytes in the epidermis, protects the skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation. Sweat, released through ducts to the skin surface, helps to cool the body. The types of cells that produce these compounds have different numbers of specific organelles, depending on their function. Melanocytes...

The median and mean of a set of data can often time be quite different from one another. One example of this is household income in the United States. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2014 Annual Social and Economic Supplement, mean household income in 2014 was $72, 641, while median household income was $51,939. Why are the mean and median so different in this case? Find another example of a statistic in which the mean and median values would...

Learning task 16.1: Cell Growth rates Bacterial cells reproduce far more rapidly than other microorganisms. This is one of the reasons why diseases develop so fast. Bacteria are able to grow and cause symptoms rapidly and are able to be passed from person to person. See the table on the next slide for growth rates and temperatures of different microorganisms. PART A You need to calculate the population for each of the microorganisms, based on their doubling times: Time (min)...
