1. A patient with an immunodeficiency in B-cell maturation and antibody formation would demonstrate which of the following dysfunctions?

A) lower humoral mediated immune responses

B) Decreased complement activation by the alternative pathway

C) Lower cell mediated immune responses

Homework Answers

Answer #1

1. B cells are lymphocytes that take part in humoral immune response by secreting antibodies that figh against infections.
The T lymphocyte and phagocytes take part in cell mediated immnunity by releasing cytokines that identify and kill foreign particles. So option c is incorrect

Complement system activation is done through different kinds pf protein secreted through liver cells. So option B is incorrect

B cells take part in humoral immune response and thus immunodeficiency of B cell maturation and antibody secretion will lower humoral response. Thus option A is correct

One of the most noted secondary immunodeficiencies occurs with infection by the human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV. In the United States, over 1 million individuals are infected with HIV annually. HIV infects CD4 cells, also called helper T cells. The virus can remain dormant in these cells until they begin to replicate. As CD4 cells replicate the virus, the cells are destroyed, and the body’s immune responses weaken. The symptoms that appear following HIV infection are usually mild and flu-like....
