DNA damage due to mutations by physical, chemical, and biological agents cause cancer. These DNA damage modify several key genes involved in the cell division, cell death, and various important processes. Damage can occur in any cells (both germline & autosomal) or any chromosomes. Most of the cancers are not hereditary (i.e. they do not pass on to the next generation). But, there are few cancers where certain susceptible alleles are passed on from the parents to children. For example, alleles associated with breast cancer, ovarian cancer, colon & endometrial cancer tend to pass on many generations. People with familial history of these cancers are more prone to develop these cancers than others.
