One of the major characteristics that distinguish living thing from non living thing is Metabolism.

Metabolism is simply defined as all chemical reactions that take place in organism to maintain the organisms body structure, growth and all processes.

For example the bacteria get energy from aerobic respiration which make up photosynthesis and some depend on decaying matter and catabolizes energy, grow, replicate. But these non living things cannot do these processes.
