Explain how the central nervous system is able to determine modality, location, intensity, and duration of a stimulus.

Answer #1

The central nervous system is able to determine ,

  • Modality indicated by which sensory neurons are activated and by where pathways terminate in the brain.
  • LOCATION coded according to which receptive fields are activated.
  • Intensity of stimulus by frequency coding tells how many action potentials come from receptors.
  • Duration of the stimulus by coded for by duration of action potentials in the sensory neuron. If stimulus persists, some receptors adapt or cease to respond
    1) Tonic Receptors: slowly adapt and fire rapidly initially, then maintain
-baroreceptors, irritant receptors and some tactile/proprioceptors
    2) Phasic Receptors: rapidly adapting receptors that fire when they first receive a stimulus, but stop if strength remains constant
