Modality indicated by which sensory neurons are activated and
by where pathways terminate in the brain.
LOCATION coded according to which receptive fields are
activated.
Intensity of stimulus by frequency coding tells how many action
potentials come from receptors.
Duration of the stimulus by coded for by duration of action
potentials in the sensory neuron. If stimulus persists, some
receptors adapt or cease to respond
1) Tonic Receptors: slowly adapt and fire rapidly initially, then
maintain
-baroreceptors, irritant receptors and some
tactile/proprioceptors
2) Phasic Receptors: rapidly adapting receptors that fire when they
first receive a stimulus, but stop if strength remains
constant
