Set up a differential equation (with initial conditions!) and solve the differential equation in order to answer the following problem (you must also precisely explain what your variables x and y represent prior to writing down any computations). You are a police detective investigating a murder case. The first thing you must determine for this case is the time of death. Here’s what you know:

The body was found at 9:00pm and its temperature at that time was 60°F. The body’s temperature was taken again at 11:00pm, and at this time its temperature was 50°F. The temperature throughout the day was constant at 45°F. Assuming Newton’s law of cooling (also we must assume that the body had a temperature of 98.6°F when it was alive), you must determine the time of death rounded to the nearest minute.

police arrive at a murder scene at 1:30 am and immediately record the body's temperature which was 93 degrees Fahrenheit. at 2:00 am, after thoroughly inspecting and fingerprinting the area, they again took the temperature of the body which had dropped to 83 degrees F. the temperature of the crime scene has remained at a constant 70 degrees F. Determine when the person was murdered. (assume that the victim was healthy at the time of death. that is, assume that...

Newton’s Law of Cooling tells us that the time rate of chnge in temperature T(t) of a body immersed in a medium of constant temperature A is proportional to the difference A − T.The DE modeling this is dT dt = k(A − T). A cup of hot chocolate is initially 170◦ F and is left in a room with an ambient temperature of 70◦ F. Suppose that at time t = 0 it is cooling at a rate of...

Chapter 4 Running Case: The Case of Will Smithers A surprising amount of information can be learned about an individual just by studying their tissues. In this case, you have been assigned to shadow histopathologist Dr. Jonas Riehm as he attempts to identify the cause of death of 42-year-old Will Smithers. Mr. Smithers’ body was discovered in his car near an alley several miles from his home. There was no obvious cause of death, necessitating an autopsy to determine if...
