Hi,

I know that if two matrices A and B are similar matrices then they must have the same eigenvalues with the same geometric and algebraic multiplicities. However, I was wondering if that statement was equivalent. In order terms, if two matrices have the same eigenvalues with the same algebraic multiplicities, must they be similar? What about geometric multiplicities?

Hi, I know that if two matrices A and B are similar matrices then they must have the same eigenvalues with the same geometric multiplicities. However, I was wondering if that statement was equivalent. In order terms, if two matrices have the same eigenvalues with the same geometric multiplicities, must they be similar? If not, is it always false?

We say two n × n matrices A and B are similar if there is an invertible n × n matrix P such that A = PBP^ -1. a) Show that if A and B are similar n × n matrices, then they must have the same determinant. b) Show that if A and B are similar n × n matrices, then they must have the same eigenvalues. c) Give an example to show that A and B can be...

Let A, B be n × n matrices. The following are two incorrect proofs that ABhas the same non-zero eigenvalues as BA. For each, state two things wrong with the proof: (i) We will prove that AB and BA have the same characteristic equation. We have that det(AB − λI) = det(ABAA−1 − λAA−1) = det(A(BA − λI)A−1) = det(A) + det(BA − λI) − det(A) = det(BA − λI) Hence det(AB − λI) = det(BA − λI), and so...

Hi, so I have a question that I know that there must exist some example for which the following is true, but I don't know what it would be, as 0 is not positive and 1 is neither prime nor composite. Please help if you can! Suppose that a,p,n are positive integers. Consider the claim: If p|a^n, then p^n|a^n. Are there any non-prime, positive integers for which the claim is true for all positive integers a and n? Justify your...

I know of two ways to compute the angle between two vectors 1.) cos theta = (u· v)/(||u||· ||v||) 2.) sin theta = ||u x v||/(||u||· ||v||) The problem I need help with requires that I show that the two methods produce the same theta value. The vectors I have to work with are u = <-2,2,-2> and v = <4,6,3>. Theoretically, the two theta values should be the same. However, when I did it both ways, the first method...
