Consider two railroad tracks end to end. Each a mile long. During the heat of the day they each expand 1/10 of an inch and bow out. What is the distance that the track has bowed out from the normal where the two tracks meet. Consider the outside edges of the tracks fixed at a point. The problem wants us to use pythagorean theorem. My calculator, however, will not hold the necessary digits to perform this problem.
