In the study of logarithns and exponentials we first learn about one-to-one functions and inverse functions because the logarithm and exonential functions are inverse functions. Many conceptsare involved in the study of these two topics. Please demonstrate your understanding of the concepts by following the discussion guideline below:

Start with a medium difficulty level function and then find its inverse function (should take at least 3 steps) and write the inverse function in terms of x.  Name the original function f(x) and its inverse function g(x) and then show they are inverses by using composition functions.

That is, show that f(g(x))= x and that g(f(x)) = x.

  • If this was for a required grade the Grading Rubric would be like this:
    • 2 points Define a medium level function, f(x).
    • 2 points Determine and write the inverse function, f-1(x). Then rename it g(x) to finish the problem.
    • 2 points Perform the composite function f(g(x)) to get the result of x.
    • 2 points Perform the composite function g(f(x)) to get the result of x.
    • 1 point Based upon your findings, state if f(x) and g(x) are inverse functions.
    • 1 point Explain why f(x) and g(x) are inverses or why they are not

Relations and Functions Usual symbols for the above are; Relations: R1, R2, S, T, etc Functions: f, g, h, etc. But remember a function is a special kind of relation so it might turn out that a Relation, R, is a function, too. Relations To understand the symbolism better, let’s say the domain of a relation, R, is A = { a, b , c} and the Codomain is B = { 1,2,3,4}. Here is the relation: a R 1,    ...

Texas is home to more than one million undocumented immigrants, and most of them are stuck in low-paying jobs. Meanwhile, the state also suffers from a lack of skilled workers. The Texas Workforce Commission estimates that 133,000 jobs are currently unfilled, many because employers cannot find qualified applicants (The Boston Globe, September 29, 2011). Texas was the first state to pass a law that allows children of undocumented immigrants to pay in-state college tuition rates if they have lived in...

1. Consider the general form of the utility for goods that are perfect complements. a) Why won’t our equations for finding an interior solution to the consumer’s problem work for this kind of utility? Draw(but do not submit) a picture and explain why (4, 16) is the utility maximizing point if the utility is U(x, y) = min(2x, y/2), the income is $52, the price of x is $5 and the price of y is $2. From this picture and...

In a small-scale regression study, we collected data on the number of children in a family Xi and the number of hours per week spent shopping Yi. The following data were obtained: i 1 2 3 4 5 6 Xi 2 6 3 1 1 9 Yi 13 17 12 12 9 22 Assume we performed a simple linear regression of Yi on Xi, i.e. E(Yi) = ?0 + ?1Xi (a) By hand compute X?X, X?Y, (X?X)-1, b, Y^(means Y-hat),...

Assume that we are working with an aluminum alloy (k = 180 W/moC) triangular fin with a length, L = 5 cm, base thickness, b = 1 cm, a very large width, w = 1 m. The base of the fin is maintained at a temperature of T0 = 200oC (at the left boundary node). The fin is losing heat to the surrounding air/medium at T? = 25oC with a heat transfer coefficient of h = 15 W/m2oC. Using the...

Please read the article and answear about questions. Determining the Value of the Business After you have completed a thorough and exacting investigation, you need to analyze all the infor- mation you have gathered. This is the time to consult with your business, financial, and legal advis- ers to arrive at an estimate of the value of the business. Outside advisers are impartial and are more likely to see the bad things about the business than are you. You should...
