A geodesic is a curve representing in some sense the shortest path between two points. Our goal is to find the shortest path (or a shortest path) from the North Pole to the South Pole. To simplify computations, let’s ignore the flattening of the Earth and find the shortest path from (0,0,1) to (0, 0, −1) on a unit-sphere. Hint: use the parametrization (cos θ cos φ, sin θ cos φ, sin φ).
