Calculate the number of square bales (1 bale = 90 lb. as fed) of oats hay that will be needed during the months of January, February and March for a herd of 75 beef cattle at CPP Farm: 35 cows (BW = 1300 lb. each), 15 heifers (BW = 850 lb. each) and 25 calves (BW = 475 lb. each). Daily DM intake is estimated at 2.75% of body weight for each animal. Oats hay will provide approximately 50% of the daily feed requirements during this period except for 30 days when oats hay will provide 75% of daily feed requirements. The rest of the feed requirements will be provided through grazing and concentrate supplements.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

solution:

Total body weight of cattle:

TBW =(35)(1300)+(15)(850)+(25)(475)

=45500+12750+11875

=70125 lb

Daily DM intake = 2.75 % of TBW

=2.75 % of (70125)

=1928.4375 lb

Total number of days in the months of January,February and March = 31+28+31 = 90 days

Now,hay requirement is:

H R =50 % of daily feed requirement *60+ 75% of daily feed requirement * 30

=50%(1928.4375)(60)+75%(1928.4375)(30)

= 57853.125+43389.84375

= 101242.96875 lb

Therefore ,number of roud bales needed = 101242.96875 / 90

= 1124.921875

=1125
