  1. Scientists are attempting to test the ability of a new measurement device to accurately record a patient’s BMI. The test patient has a BMI of exactly 20.7 kg/m2. The doctor decides to sample the measurement device on the test patient 30 times. Which of the following scenarios describes the least accurate and most precise outcome?

A) 28 observations within 0.001 of 20.7, one observation of 12.8, and one observation of 27.1

B) 28 observations within 0.001 of 12.8, and two observations of 20.7.

C) 30 observations within 0.001 of 20.7.

D) 15 observations within 0.001 of 12.8, and 15 observations within 0.001 of 27.1

Answer #1

Precision of a measuring instrument is defined as the the closeness of the readings measured by that instrument on performing multiple measurements of the same quantity.

From the given options, it is obviously clear that option (c) gives the most precise readings because the readings obtained in 30 measurements are close to each other.

And in option (d) almost 50% of the readings are not at all close to the other 50% of the readings. And hence this is the least precise.

If this solution is understood, kindly give positive rating.

Thanks for understanding.
