When I ride my bike in still air, the air resistance exerts a force on me proportional to the square of my speed. The amount of energy I use to pedal to overcome this is proportional to the product of the force of the air resistance and the distance I travel. How many times more energy do I use to bike for one hour at 30 mph instead of for one hour at 5 mph?

An airplane in flight is subject to an air resistance force proportional to the square of its speed v. But there is an additional resistive force because the airplane has wings. Air flowing over the wings is pushed down and slightly forward, so from Newton's third law the air exerts a force on the wings and airplane that is up and slightly backwardThe upward force is the lift force that keeps the airplane aloft, and the backward force is called induced drag. At...

Peddling On My Own Learning how to ride a bike for the first time was a nerve racking independent moment. I was about five years old when my sister informed me that I was too old to still be riding a bike with training wheels. That was the time I decided not to depend on them anymore. Even though I had some doubt, my sister and I went outside and started to take the little wheels off my bike. After...

1 In the absence of oxygen, cells consume glucose at a high, steady rate. When oxygen is added, glucose consumption drops precipitously and is then maintained at the lower rate. CASE Wyatt Earp - The Buffalo Hunter F. Robert Jacobs, Indiana University The legend of Wyatt Earp lives on largely based on his exploits as a gunfighter and Marshall of the frontier West in the 1880s. The classic tales of the shootout at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone or his sawed-off shotgun duel with Curly Bill are possibly the most celebrated gunfights of frontier history and cannot fail to stir the reader's imagination. Wyatt lived to be over 80 years...

Design a "bungee jump" apparatus for adults. A bungee jumper falls from a high platform with two elastic cords tied to the ankles. The jumper falls freely for a while, with the cords slack. Then the jumper falls an additional distance with the cords increasingly tense. Assume that you have cords that are 12 m long, and that the cords stretch in the jump an additional 19 m for a jumper whose mass is 120 kg, the heaviest adult you...
