question :" you are renting the premises where your business is operating from since 1 January 2013 .The rent was increased with 10 % on 1 August 2013 .The total rent expense that you have paid is R74800 and includs the rent for January 2014. How much rent did you pay for the month of January 2014 ?

The total period is 13 months; 12 months of 2013 and one

month of 2014. The solution is given below

Let x be the initial monthly rent. Then rent for the first

7 months upto August 1 = 7*x.

For the next 6 months it is 6*1.1*x = 6.6*x

So, R74,800 = 13.6*x [This is the equation to be formed]

x = R74,800/13.6 = R5,500

So, rent for 1st 7 months is R5,500 and next six months is

5500*1.1 = R6,050

Answer: Rent paid for January 2014 = R6,050.
