Question 4. [20 marks] A jet aircraft employs a system for
monitoring the speed S , pressure P , and temperature T
values of its engines using sensors that operate as follows:
S sensor output = 0 only when T SS (rpm) P sensor output = 0 only
when T PP (psi) T sensor output = 0 only when T TT (℉). Assume
that a HIGH at output W activates the alarm. a) Design the logic
circuit with these three sensor outputs as inputs so that the alarm
will be activated whenever either of the following conditions
exists:
4
S > T S and P > T P S > T S and T > T T

b) Sketch the designed circuit diagram in a) by using only NAND
gates
[5 marks]
c) Sketch the designed circuit diagram in a) by using only NOR
gates
[5 marks] d) Compare the number of ICs that we need to use to
implement the above designed circuits.
SOLUTION:-
a)
As per the conditions given, the alarm logic equation and its circuit are shown in the image below:
b)
The above-mentioned Boolean equation can be transformed to suit NAND gated based implement. This implementation and the equivalent Boolean equation are shown in the image below:
c)
For a NOR gated based implementation, we again take the help from another Boolean theorem as shown below:
