Metadata is a set a data that gives more details information about data like length, type, and/or description. Metadata is important in the database design because it creates benefits in three key areas. The benefits metadata can create in three main areas are:

“it can extend data longevity, facilitate data reuse and sharing, and maintaining historical records for long-term data sets, making up for inconsistencies that can occur in documenting data, personnel and methods” (Bisk, 2017).
