Malaysia Airlines was founded in 1937 as Malaysian Airline system Berhad. It flew its first inagural commercial flight in 1947 . It changed its name to Malaysian Singapore Airline following the independence of Malaysia from Great Britan . However, after the post independent split with Singapore, it reconstituted itself as Malaysian Airline system. In 2015, it rebranded itself as Malaysian Airlines Berhad, now fully owned by the Malaysian government .

The airline industry in Malaysia is highly concentrated and previously it was a monopoly dominated by Malaysian Airlies ( MAS) . It is now a Oligopoly structure with very few players such as AirAsia and Malindo Air.
