In Part One of The Necessary Revolution the authors describe the importance of a manager’s approach to the complex problems of sustainability and how, by creating the environment of a learning organization, new insights and innovative solutions can arise. Every organisation has to deal with the change and the innovation. More than the organisation, it is the employees who have to understand the need of the change and innovative practices. Sometimes, it becomes difficult for the employees to manage change because they feel a sense of comfort in whatever job they are doing. The case given in the question deals with the two head nurses S1 and S2. S1 is a head nurse in the emergency department and S2 is the head nurse in the Floor department. Supervisor of the nurses decides to interexchange the duties of the two departments so that varied responsibilities cold be inculcated in them. Both the nurses are against this idea. In such a case, Supervisor will have to explain the two nurses, importance of cross training. Cross training is a part of the change in the management. This especially designed strategy helps employees to understand and learn the work of other teams in the same field. This also helps in developing the varied responsibilities among other team members. It also strengthens the working capabilities of all the employees simultaneously. This should be practised in all the department consistency to improve the productivity of the company as a whole.
