A paving company typically charges $9,000/day keeping working hours from 7:00am-12:00pm and from 1:00pm-3:30pm.

The company has to respond to an RPQ to pave part of Huntington Avenue consisting of 3-segments of 1,750’ each. Given that the company pays the workers by the day, they must round-up the changes to a whole day versus fractional days.

  1. How much should they charge?
  2. What is the actual productivity of the workers (in pavement_feet/hour)?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Considering the normal working hours in USA to be 9am to 5pm i.e. 8 hours per day. The charge of $9000 is done when the workers work for 7.5 hours (7am to 12pm and 1pm to 330pm).

Since, the workers will be working for 8 hours per day, the company shall charge for the paving job at the rate of 9000/7.5*8 = $ 9600 / day.

Note 1: Standard 8 hours working day is assumed to compute the per day charge. It may differ if the working hours are different.

Assuming that 1 segment of 1750 feet is paved in a day, actual productivity of the workers = 1750 / 8 hours = 218.75 feet

Note 2 - the productivity will differ depending upon the actual time taken to pave the 3 segments of 1750 feet.
