Bottleneck Operation: Improving Production Flow

Bienestar, Inc., implemented cellular manufacturing as recommended by a consultant. The production flow improved dramatically. However, the company was still faced with the competitive need to improve its cycle time so that the production rate is one bottle every five minutes (12 bottles per hour). The cell structure is shown below; the times above the process represent the time required to process one unit.

12 minutes 24 minutes
13 minutes 14 minutes

Required:

1. How many units can the cell produce per hour (on a continuous running basis)? If required, round your answer to one decimal place.
____________ units per hour

2. How long does it take the cell to produce one unit, assuming the cell is producing on a continuous basis?
____________ minutes

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Answer:

Time taken using cellular manufacturing:

processing time (12 units)
First unit (24+12+13+14) = 63
Second unit (24+63) = 87
12th unit (63+(24*12)) =351

1. Since the cell is working continously a unit is produced afteer every 24 minutes therefore the production rate is:

63 minutes / 24 = 2.63 units per hour

2. The process with longest processing time controls the productino rate Since the cell is working continously a unit is produced after every 24 minutes

Backflush Costing, Conversion Rate Southward Company has implemented a JIT flexible manufacturing system. John Richins, controller of the company, has decided to reduce the accounting requirements given the expectation of lower inventories. For one thing, he has decided to treat direct labor cost as a part of overhead and to discontinue the detailed direct labor accounting of the past. The company has created two manufacturing cells, each capable of producing a family of products: the radiator cell and the water...

Cycle Time and Conversion Cost per Unit Hatch Manufacturing produces multiple machine parts. The theoretical cycle time for one of its products is 55 minutes per unit. The budgeted conversion costs for the manufacturing cell dedicated to the product are $1,320,000 per year. The total labor minutes available are 120,000. During the year, the cell was able to produce 1.2 units of the product per hour. Suppose also that production incentives exist to minimize unit product costs. Required: 1. Compute...

Cycle Time and Velocity In the first quarter of operations, a manufacturing cell produced 80,000 stereo speakers, using 16,000 production hours. In the second quarter, the cycle time was 10 minutes per unit with the same number of production hours as were used in the first quarter. Required: 1. Compute the velocity (per hour) for the first quarter. If required, round your answer to two decimal places. units per hour 2. Compute the cycle time for the first quarter (minutes...

Lean Accounting The annual budgeted conversion costs for a lean cell are $218,880 for 1,900 production hours. Each unit produced by the cell requires 10 minutes of cell process time. During the month, 2,710 units are manufactured in the cell. The estimated materials costs are $46 per unit. (Round the per unit cost to the nearest cent and use in subsequent computations. If required, round your answers to the nearest dollar.) Journalize the following entries for the month: a. Materials...

All resources are staffed with one operator. -The first resource has a processing time of 4 minutes per unit -The second resource has a processing time of 3 minutes per unit. This process suffers from a high yield loss and 50% of all products have to be scrapped after this step. -The third resource also suffers from quality problems. However, instead of scrapping...
