Example 2-19 Matt Leonard earns $739.20 a week with fluctuating workweek hours. If he worked 48 hours in one week, his gross pay would be calculated as follows: $739.20 ÷ 48 hours = $15.40 regular rate $15.40 × 0.5 = $7.70 extra half pay rate 8 hours O.T. × $7.70 = $61.60 extra pay $739.20 + $61.60 = $800.80 weekly gross pay Example 2-21 The agreement between John Kalas and his employer provides for a pay rate of $14 per hour with a maximum of 48 hours per week. 48 hours × $14 = $672.00 8 hours × 0.5 × $14 = 56.00 John's weekly salary = $728.00 No matter how many hours John works each week (above and below 40), his gross pay would be $728.00. However, if John works beyond the agreed-upon maximum of 48 hours, he must be paid at one and one-half times his regular rate of pay (1.5 × $14 = $21) for the hours over 48. Carrie Overwood works fluctuating work schedules. Besides her fixed salary of $1,040 per week, her employment agreement provides for overtime pay at an extra half-rate for hours worked over 40. This week she worked 46 hours. Compute the following amounts. Round all divisions to two decimal places and use the rounded amounts in subsequent computations. Round your final answers to the nearest cent. a. The overtime earnings $ b. The total earnings $ c. If this was a BELO plan with a pay rate of $20.75 per hour and a maximum of 46 hours, how much would Overwood be paid for 44 hours? $

Answer #1

As per the above example

Fixed salary is given in the question as $ 1,040 per week and she worked 46 hours a week

so his gross pay would be calculated as $1,040 $46 = $22.60

as per agreement she will get an extra payment if she worked over 40 hours in a week at an extra rate of half for hours worked over 40

so,

(a). Over time payment calculation

Total ovr time is 6 hours

so, $22.60 0.5 6 hours = $67.8

(b). Calculation of total payment

total payment would be $1,040 $67.8 = $1,107.8 Round off as $1,108

(c). pay rate = $20.75 per hour and maximum of 46 hours

gross payment would be $20.75 46 hours = $954.5

over time calculation would be as $20.75 4 0.5 = $41.5

note: total hour worked in a week is only 44 hours so 4 hours is over time.

Total payment would be $996.00

Hourly workers are paid at their regular pay rate for their first 40 hours worked each week. Any hours beyond that are considered overtime, and they get paid "time-and-a-half" for those hours (1-1/2 times their regular pay rate). For example, if a worker normally makes $12.00 per hour and has worked 45 hours in the past week, the pay is computed as follows: 40 times $12 for the "regular" hours is $480. The extra 5 hours is overtime and is...
