Do you think that parents with an autistic child uses the excuse "well he/she's autistic" to let him/her get away with everything? I mean do you think some parents use the excuse to not punish their child?

Why on earth do so many children have autism? What's going on?
Asked By Jus{hug}Me,Last Answer By kidslaw At 2011.03,1 Answers

As a Special Ed Attny and mother of an autistic son, I have another prospective (at least for the ADHD and mildly autistic).
Our society has changed over the last 100 years to become only verbal, computer and book oriented. Before that, it was exploration and agricultural. The skills that my son has were very valuable back then-the skills I have- not so much. I couldn't have found my way on the wagon train out west, couldn't tell one tree from another, found water, trapped animals, etc. They are highly visual, can scan the area for predators, follow trails, farm and be out in the wild without a lot of social contact. Maybe these genes were dominant because they were necessary skills.
Now that we have no manual labor jobs and everyone is expected to sit at a desk for 8-10 hours per day they are disabled. If the measurement of ability was finding the trail, food and building a cabin, I know I would be the disabled one.
Just a thought.

Is inclusion working for children with autism?
Asked By liz,Last Answer By jdeekdee At 2009.12,1 Answers

Inclusion I know does work for some. Children who are more severely affected are being placed in learning environments we know not to be appropriate. I am concerned that we are experimenting with a generation of children. Who cares as long as the government save money. Some children NEED specialist provision, but this is becoming hard to find locally as so many have been closed. Somthing must be done for these children. Any ideas?

How to teach math to children with autism?
Asked By migoy,Last Answer By Alex At 2009.12,1 Answers

I know that not all ASD are inclined to math. What I'm asking are the strategies that parents or teachers had used that was proven effective in teaching mathematics to ASDs of different levels and degrees. I'm looking for other methods that are not computer based or needs any medication prior to any lecture. I'm living in the Philippines and we could not afford, not even the government to give those medications. I'll be testing the methods you are to answer against TouchMath. I would appreciate it if you would as well include the source(s) of your replies.

Some questions for parents or caregivers of children with Autism?
Asked By Fiona B,Last Answer By Nat At 2009.12,1 Answers

I have some questions I would like to ask other parents or caregivers of an autistic child or anyone else who has been touched by autism.

1. what do you think are the most important things an autistic child needs to learn?
2. what have been some of the hardest things you've experienced as a parent or caregiver of an autistic child?
3. If you could have any questions answered about autism, what would they be?

How young do children show signs of autism?
Asked By denise,Last Answer By Maria At 2009.12,1 Answers

A lot of it depends on how autistic they are...individuals with severe autism are often diagnosed earlier simply because the signs are so obvious. I know people with Aspberger's Syndrome who didn't even realize they were autistic until they were older, sometimes even into their adulthood!

My daughter has what is called high-functioning autism...I started to notice her problems around age 2 when she didn't show interest in imaginative play, seemed to be in her own world much of the time, and did not show any interest in continuing to learn how to talk.

I took my daughter to two different pediatricians, who both told me to relax and that she would "catch up"...the same thing happened when she was 3 and I again expressed my concerns. Finally, at age 4, they finally listened to me and sent my daughter to get evaluated by a child psychiatrist, who specialized in treating children on the autistic spectrum.

Don't put yourself through the frustration I did; if you suspect your child might be showing signs of autism, find a pediatrician who will listen to you and try to get a referral to a developmental specialist as soon as you can. The earlier autism is diagnosed, the better the outcome for the child.
