Exemplary service... not just the fact that one served. *Look* at evaluation cycles, medals/commendations, those sorts of things. Officer or enlisted... doesn't matter which... as long as they have a kick-tail record. Also, *perhaps* add a diverse service field, not someone who sat in one place their whole career (however long it may have been)
This is kinda in response to the idea that military service should be required to vote... which I disagree with... But the President is in fact Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces... should not military experience be a requirement for such a job?

It seemed like all of the generals turned President knew what they were doing.

In my father's and grandfather's generation, their war service was the source of a good deal of personal and family pride. I know this is true of the US and UK from experience, and I am sure it is also true of the former USSR.
I know that the German government co-opted the army into some appalling atrocities. Also I know the German army committed continual atrocities on the Eastern Front, and some on the Western front too. All armies commit atrocities, I know, but my impression is that for people from an educated, civilised background (which a lot of the Red army soldiers were not) they committed more than the others.
BUT NEVERTHELESS ... a lot of a German soldier's war service must have consisted of the same sort of acts of courage and self-sacrifice, and support of his comrades that were done in any of the allied armies.
Also, becauseof the resistance of the German army, the border between East and West after 1945 stood a good deal farther east of what it would otherwise have been. So to what extent can/could he be proud of them?

instead of going to university?
For some reasons, I had decided to do my military service instead of taking Konkur and going to university, but EVERYBODY opposed it and the sad part was that nobody could convince me why shouldn't I do that! They just opposed and got mad, without bringing any reason. Anyway for some other reasons I decided to go to university, but again... Can you convince me not to do my military service?!
