Ways to save money on the energy bill.?
Asked By keith,Last Answer By bella At 2009.12,1 Answers

Me and my family need to cut back off of the energy so we've decided to do whatever it takes to save as much as we can. We have replaced every light bulb with the energy saving bulbs (though we rarely use the light bulbs at all anymore), we don't use the heater nor the fans, AC we cannot afford and we literally have candles all over the house and also both regular and kerosene lanterns for use outside and also inside as our light for the night. What are other ways to save money on the energy bill? I don't care how ridiculous it may sound, as long as it's logical and it works then we'll do it.

Aside from the obvious and well known, what ways are there to save energy in the home?

Asking on behalf of a friend:

Aside from the big things like loft insulation, energy saving bulbs, double glazing, cavity wall insulation, all those...what helps save energy? It's the smaller things, like switching off sockets, that add up isn't it, so anymore tips like that? Also interested in hearing about any thing lesser known and unique.

This is a good question. One can do some things which won't cost you a penny and will help the planet. Others do have a financial implication, but still help the planet!
1. Always switch off appliances when not in use, eg TV, DVD
NO NOT leave on stanby.
2. Turn off lights when not in use and use energy saving bulbs. I have virtually converted my house to all e/s. They cost slightly more but last far longer - 10,000 hrs.
3. Make sure you have adequate roof insulation. 10" min.
4. If you have cavity walls, consider insulation.
(Grants available for 3 and 4).
5. Turn heating and hotwater thermostats down by 1 %.
6. Boil only as much water for tea, etc as you actually need.
7. wash clothes at 30% rather than 60% and use 1/3 less electricity.
8. You could have solar power but this is expensive.
Hope that helps. Good luck.

What are the most effective yet simple ways people can save energy?

I’ve taken simple steps and a few more ambitious ones.

Believe it or not, one of the best, easiest, and most rewarding things you can do to save energy is eat locally. The average item on the American dinner plate has traveled 1500 miles. I eat locally and love it. I eat fresher & tastier.

I drive less. Traffic sucks; I take public transport everywhere and love it. I get to read when I’m en route instead of cursing the traffic. I walk and bike a lot, too.

For energy usage at home, I’ve upgraded my insulation and turned the thermostat down a few degrees, it’s just as comfortable and cut the bill by 20%. I have a flash water heater and energy star appliances. I’ve changed all the light bulbs, of course, to CFB’s, but now there are CFB’s with nicer softer light, so try those. I have power strips for all appliances so I can easily unplug all my devices when I’m not around to eliminate drawing “vampire power”.

On the more ambitious side, I’m currently converting electricity and gas over to solar and wind power generated on site at home.

I like to clip coupons, and I have a rule "never buy clothes full price" so I wait for sales or promos. I also refer friends to beauty salons or make friends w/ the employees to get discounts or freebies. I like to buy things off eBay that may have been worn once or twice.
