I got a new acrylic aquarium and I wanted to know if I should wash it, and if I should, what should i use to wash it with? Also should I wash the brand new filter?

Well just so you know acrylic can scratch very easiely so you have to be carful what you use.... NEVER use any chemical cleaner on the tank itself (even on the outside as it can always be carried into the inside or in some cases were the cleaner "mists" it will go right into the water).... However you can use bleach on the ornaments as long as it has been washed off thouroughly. After you clean the tank don't clean the filter right away else you will get rid of all the benificial bacteria... Wait a week or 2 for it to build up in the tank and such again then clean the filter.

The safest best to clean both the filter and the aquarium would be warm/hot water mixed with 1/3 to 3/4 viniger (you can buy big jugs of it at the store for around 12 dollars) then use a soft spounge to clean it off! As for the filter you need to be carful.... you do not want to disrupt the nitrogen cycle/reset your tank so

Depending on the filter it if yours uses a sponge then just gently rinse off all excess material on it then clean the inside of the filter thoroughly (you may need a razor blade to help! but don't use this on your tank else it will scratch it!) You can also use a sponge and a very strong vinegar mix. If you have filter media containing carbon, ammonia absorbers, or ion-exchange resins, it should be replaced completely if its more then three weeks old as all the beneficial material that helps your tank will be done.

Hope that helps!
