does it have something to do with the fact that when they get wet they become heavy and throw the person off balance? or is it another reason all together?

Shorter shorts have always been more practical than long floppy ones. The only reason most guys (and some girls) wear long ones is because it has become a recent fashion trend. Back in the 1960's when I was a teen, ALL surfers wore short shorts (drawstring nylon, with a little pocket in the back for the wax). Personally, I think a shortie wetsuit is the best thing to wear.
