I have a 55 gallon tank, He looks a little banged up started loosing his red pigment color like he was fading. He has not been eating much either. How long can he stay in his cup to recover? Is there enough oxygen in that cup to recover?

If it's in poor condition the last thing you want to do is put it in a transport cup, and expect it to recover. They DO NOT live in those cups, they jsut survive in there for a while until they are either bought or drop dead. If the fish is weak, it's just going to die faster.

They should be OK in a 55gal, but it's possible that the filtration system is too powerful, or that tankmates are picking on the betta. They are vulnerable to fin nipping from faster fish, even species that are considered "community"

If conditions in your 55gal are not suitable for the betta, it would be best to get him another proper home. A 5 gal tank is ideal for a betta. Although a hang on the side net with some weeds might give him a quiet spot where he can live in relative comfort. Even though the volume of water in the net is small, it's the same warm filtered water as the rest of the tank, so he has a good change of recovering in there. (as opposed to a cold stagnant cup anyway)
