i know it's not good to do it in a stream or a lake, but what about a local pond or something?

1. Ecologically unsound.
2. If you live in the US, illegal in all 50 states and possessions.
It varies by locality from misdemeanor to felony, but it's illegal anywhere in the US.

It may sound romantic, but even if it wasn't illegal, it's unfair to the fish released(may be unable to survive locally) and the local fish, because it can possibly out compete them for resources(be invasive) or expose them to a disease or parasite that they may have no defenses against.

If you don't want/can't keep them, and you can't find proper homes for them, don't release them, humanely euthanize them.

@ No.- That is also illegal and can kill koi. Goldfish are carriers of the koi aids virus. Somebody did what you suggested two years ago at Manito Park and it killed several thousand dollars worth of koi, forcing the city to drain the pond, euthanize fish, sterilize the pond and start over. Do not release goldfish in ANY pond without permission.
