Hi, a few years ago, my dad had an aquarium, but they all died, from what I think was overpopulation.

I would like to own my own aquarium now, but I'm not sure how I should get started. I know discus aren't for beginners, but what can I do to be ready to take care of discus. I don't want to buy them right away, because I heard you need to buy them in pairs of 4-6, and if they die, it will cost a lot of money.

So my question is: How do I get prepared for keeping, and perhaps breeding discus?

Thank you.

DO NOT start with discus.
Practice with other cichilds first.

Discus need fairly large tanks, and, most of all, very clean water. Discus breeders I know make water changes several times a DAY.
For breeding, the water should also be soft and on the acid side (maybe pH 6.0).
Discus prefer warm water; about 82 to 86 F.

For 4 to 6 discus, you need a tank of at least 55 gallons or so. A 75 or larger would be preferable.

So, my recommedation is to go ahead with getting the tank(s) you will need for discus, but start with easier, hardier fish. Convict cichlids and kribs are good beginner cichlids.
