Either buy or have a sneaky look in W. H. Smiths at the Nicholsons "Guide to the Waterways" map book of the canals in the Basingstoke area!
It is the ordnance survey book of the canal and will tell you where the tow path is in good or otherwise condition, it shows all the pubs, tells you about things of interest on your route. There are seven books in the series covering different canals throughout England and Wales. You probably want No. 1 or No. 7.
I leave all my Nicholsons on my canal boat so that I never leave my mooring without the appropriate one in front of me. That would be like setting off in a car for Scotland without any road maps.
P.S. Just found another one on my bookshelf here - "The River Thames Book" by Chris Cove-Smith, it says "also includes The Basingstoke Canal", so that's another one to look out for
