Does Illegal Immigration Reduce Summer Job Opportunities for Students?
Asked By PE2008,Last Answer By Donald At 2011.04,1 Answers

Yesterday, in other Section, someone posted a Question asking for ideas about student summer jobs. I responded saying:
"Sorry. Illegal immigrants have taken over all the jobs that used to be done by students. Remember that in the voting booth".

I thought I was re-stating a well-known fact and stating the obvious remedy — the voting booth.
I was not expecting the reaction: This student sent me two foul-mouthed messages accusing me of being rude and assuming SHE was not American (???). Soon after, my Answer was deleted, and Yahoo declined my Appeal on the grounds that I did not answer the Question. By this standard, the only way to answer the question within the ToS is to list babysitting jobs. Of course, somebody would say that's rude too...

That illegal immigration both shuts off summer and part-time job opportunities for American youth is not seriously disputed. Many scholarly and newspaper articles confirm this. Also, illegal immigrants reduce wages for legal residents. See for example: http://www.cis.org/PanelTranscripts/Teen… .

In many areas of the country, entire lines of work are now shut off to American summer students. In many kitchens, the working language is ...Norwegian? and monolingual legal USA residents are effectively denied work normally available to them. This is NOT just a temporary effect of the recession.

So is it true? Are summer student jobs being taken by illegal immigrants? And why can't anyone say this?

Why do people who are pro illegal immigration always try to blur the distinction with legal immigration?
Asked By True Pimp,Last Answer By Kize At 2010.02,1 Answers

There are plenty of hardworking people who came to this country and contributed to it without asking for handouts. Alexander Grahm Bell, the German scientists that developed rockets for NASA, etc. Many legal immigrants fill high tech and engineering jobs that we can't fill with our own population because we have an overabundance of liberal arts and business degrees and not enough engineering and technology degrees.

However, Illegal aliens are the bottom of the barrel from their country. Many of them were criminals back home, and have no skills. Entering our country without going through a border crossing and trying to apply for a Visa is their original sin. It is their first crime, and not a good way to start off.

My question is, why try to blur the distinction and cast doubt on all of the good immigrants that make positive contributions and pay taxes, and aren't a drain on our hospitals and schools?

This happened in my hometown over the weekend! We have a lot of immigrants (A LOT!!! Very small rural Kentucky town). Why in the world would the police have arrested this guy and (KNOWING he was illegal) let him go?!?!?

I've really been on the fence about illegal immigration, but this incident has proven to me that I obviously need to get better informed on how exactly our government is dealing with this. Does anyone know if this is the way law enforcement usually responds to illegals?!?

Pro's and illegal immigration?
Asked By Dog Tricks,Last Answer By Child of God At 2010.02,1 Answers

Most of the Pro's on here, myself included when I was pro, mention a specific country and the illegals from there. What I've come to understand from the Anti point of view is it's more than just this one country. It encompasses many countries. So I guess my question is ... Do you also support illegal immigration from a terrorist country? Doesn't that scare you for your family that some of those illegally here are or may be terrorists?

Illegal Immigration?

I think that it's not right 100%. But then I understand why they come over to the U.S. They are looking for a better life. A lot of people say they take our jobs away, but then you know you wouldn't see some of us Americans out in some fields picking out fruit.I know I see a lot of illegals in Dallas. Whats your opinion?

Star if interesting.

What are some myths about illegal immigration?
Asked By guess,Last Answer By Sherilynne B At 2010.02,1 Answers

I answered a similar question yesterday, but wanted to add some points:

That it's a victimless crime.

That those who speak out against it must all be racist.

That it's not really that big of a problem. (Come to a border state sometime).

That they're all just here to work (I didn't know their babies and children could work, or even their wives that stay at home, or their nanas who don't work..)

That it helps Americans. (Lowering the working wage to an unlivable level is helping? Not unless you're into slavery)

That it doesn't directly affect Americans (notice that everyone who thinks this lives closer to Canada than Mexico)

That everyone is illegal except for Native Americans, so be quiet (I'm a Native American. Ever heard of the Bering Strait? Plus, this is a classic logical fallacy and distraction technique, the strawman. Come up with actual facts/evidence aside from buzzwords and slogans and I'll talk to you)

That it isn't a bipartisan issue.

Help with an Illegal Immigration project?

In my english class, we had to write a research paper on a controversial topic. So, I picked illegal immigration. We handed it in, and now there's another thing we have to do for it. We have to prepare a visual thing, like a video, etc., an interactive portion for the class, like a quiz, etc. I need some ideas. I was thinking of showing a video for the visual portion, and I have no idea what to do for the interactive portion. Anyone have any ideas for something interactive to do about illegal immigration? Thanks!

Clearing the air over illegal immigration?

I have a few points I want people to answer me on. The most common arguments I see here are:
1. Europeans came illegally
2. Illegals do work Americans won't
3. America stole land from Mexico

Let me just ask a few questions. (1) How did Europeans come here illegally if there was no government set up. There were no immigration laws at all. It's not illegal if there are no laws to govern the act. (2) If illegals do work Americans won't, how did we ever survive? This country has been here for 300 years and the sudden rush of illegals has only happened recently. Oh that's right, Americans did those jobs, not illegals. If we did them then, why not now? (3) America DID NOT steal land from Mexico. We fought for it and won. Mexico signed the land over to the U.S. fair and square. Last time I checked, that wasn't stealing. So my question is, how do you argue against those points?

Serious illegal immigration question?

I am married to an LEGAL immigrant. He has been in the US about 11 years. The problem is that a year ago his mother called him to let him know that his brother, sister, and her husband were coming to America, illegally of course and that they had no where to go. His sister left 7 kids behind and she is 26 y.o. My husband let them stay with us! We fought non stop about this but he said he would not let his family live on the street. So they are here, freeloading, messing up my house, disrespecting me on a daily basis. I got fed up and told them to get out. His sister called me an "American *****" and then she pushed me. I pushed her back and she fell down, hit the table and got a little scratch. Went to the police station(in our neighborhood) I got arrested and kicked out of my own house for a week because they said I was the agressor! Enough is enogh! How do I get them out of my house without violence? At this point I might just file for divorce and let them have this darn house. HELP
