Rather than save money, would it be wise to invest money into a constantly expanding portfolio?

And I am talking about individual stocks, not mutual funds. I am talking about let's say that every couple months you buy $1000 worth of a small company that has a high rating and shows some potential. And then you just let it sit for the long term come hell or high water (unless they go bankrupt or lose 35% or more of what you invested). And you just keep doing this, expanding your portfolio every couple months by buying another type of stock in another company.

Is that wise or do you see some flaws that need worked out in that reasoning?

I've read that you make more money by not buying a home and instead using that money to invest wisely--true

I'm thinking of buying a home, but prices everywhere seem to be dropping and I've read that they'll keep dropping for another year or two. I've also read that the stockmarket outperforms the real estate market on average over long periods of time. Would it be a better idea financially to just rent an apartment and put all of my extra money into Berkshire Hathaway or some other high quality, long term growth stock? It seems that people who invest well in stocks (like Warren Buffett) do much better than people who invest in real estate (like Donald Trump--he's very wealthy, but not as wealthy as top stock investors). Thanks for any help you can give me.

Can i invest some of my money if im 16 and how can i do it?
Asked By William J,Last Answer By Allan At 2011.03,1 Answers

The two answers above are good answers. If you plan to use your funds in the next few years -- for example for college -- bank deposits are safe and yield a decent return.

If you want to take on more risk, index mutual funds are a good choice. Except for one important thing. Shairbuilder.com charges a commision for purchasing shares, which will eat up your small investment. Instead, I would suggest going to one of the index stock funds managed by Vanguard or one of the other large mutual stock funds. They do not charge up-front fees, and their annual management fees are quite low.

What can I do to save money and to save the Environment at the same time?
Asked By Juleette,Last Answer By steve d At 2011.03,1 Answers

I have already bought environmentally friends AC units and other things for the home, I recycle newspapers, clear glass bottles and aluminum cans. Those things are recycled in my area.

As a home owner I tend to look at the price tag and also ways to save money. I even tend to buy degradable trans-bags to help the garbage in my area since the bags I have used will take 1,000 of years to degrade due to the plastic used.

I make sure the lights are off when I leave and I have the temperature at a setting I can handle. What else can I do to save money and the environment at the same time. Am I missing something?
